Back in the saddle

It’s been a while between shoots for me – I have been away OS (still have not finished my processing of travel shots).  Then there was what I call the “Spring Carnival”, meaning birthday’s for both my wife and daughter (on adjacent days) with all the crazyness that goes with this. To top it off we bought a puppy, which has added to household activity considerably. Between all this and a bit of lifestyle reengineering, shooting for pleasure has been an unviable option.

But we fixed that problem on the weekend. The Melbourne Strobists heade out to Gulf Station for a shoot. It’s a fantastic location, and if you can orginaise it you will be spoilt for choice on locations. We were like kids in a candy shop, and unlike other shoots, we rarley even saw the other groups who were shooting. With enough models to go around, we were able to provide everyone with a fair amount of camera time, as well as a heap of on set learning from the other ‘togs in each group.

I was fortunate to shoot Marco and Kim over the day. They were great at taking direction. I was also delighted to shoot with Ross, Marcus and Greg. Ross and Marcus are guys I have worked with before, and they know how to roll. With their able assistance I was really able to kick into gear and get great results. So props to you guys.

Gear wise, I really enjoyed using my home made beauty dish. It’s made from an old wok lid, but it’s very effective at giving flattering, feather-able light. Apart from that, I am loving my new softbox. At present, I am thinking that a softbox and beauty dish combo with a bit of hard strobe hair light action is approaching heaven!
