On the weekend I did two things that were photographically interesting, both of them related to the same event.
The school where my kids go held its annual fair on Sunday. At the fair, they hold a ‘Silent Auction’ that is very successful at raising funds. Local businesses and school families donate goods that can be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the school.
On a whim, I decide to offer a family portrait session, and I am delighted to say that it was sold above my nominated reserve price.
While my photography gets better and better there is a tangible difference between someone (my mum) saying my pictures are good, and someone stumping up their hard earned cash, entrusting me with the precious family images. It’s validation on a whole different level.
For the second year running, the school also invited the Snake Handler to attend as one of the key attractions. Sean, who runs the business, does a great job of educating people about the dangers of snakes, while removing the irrational fears and misinformation that surrounds snakes and other reptiles. He tells me he picked up his first tiger snake at age 4….
This year and last, we have also had a photo booth next door to his display, where the kids (and some brave grown-ups) can have their photo taken with the reptile of their choice. I volunteered to do the shooting and post production printing, which was a blast! We raised a bit of money for the school, and I got the chance to practice my portraiture with a ‘captive’ audience.
I can’t share images of other people’s children in this forum, but here’s a couple of pictures to give you a feel for the event:
My daughter, brave as ever, with Emerald, the Olive Python, all 13 kilgrams of her…

And some other joker at the top of the post – what an idiot…
