If you have stumbled on my facebook page, you would know that I don’t really get there all that often, and my profile picture is terrible… It’s the usual irony of a photographer who doesn’t take great pictures of himself. much like an motor mechanics often have the worst cars…
Anyway, the topic of facebook profile pictures came up on Saturday night, so while Mrs A dealt with the lamb shanks and cous-cous, I pulled out some gear for a quick FB portrait of Aleks.
This took about 5 minutes to shoot and another 5 minutes in post, so about 10 minutes from “OK let’s do it” to “It’s done and loaded to Facebook”. Not bad eh?
For the technically minded:
- Nikon D80 with 50mm f1.8 lens
- A speedlight in a home made beauty dish above Aleks, with a silver reflector underneath to fill out some of the shadows.
- If I did the shot again I would probably try a softbox or a shoot through umbrella, but I love the ease of setup and the highlights on hair that you get with the beauty dish, but the shadows are a little deeper, especially when it’s used from above..
