Laughter and Grace

Heading into last weekend, it was looking like I would have a free day last Sunday – no fixed plans.

We had previously arranged a fashion jewellery shoot for Bespoke Beads, but illness on the part of our models unfortunately threw those plans into disarray.

But then the photography gods intervened and I took a call from Janine, who has three beautiful kids, some empty space on her wall and a birthday coming up. After a chat about styles and objectives, we arranged to take some photos of her youngest boy, Tom, on Sunday afternoon, with a full family shoot in the coming weeks. Cool bananas – Sunday would not need to be a photography free zone!

On Sunday morning, we took out kids to see “Toy Story 3” in the morning and rolled home just after lunch. I had left my phone at home, so when I arrived back I checked my messages. Just as well, as Janine had been able to wrangle the whole family for the shoot, not just young Tom…

Zoinks! I had to quickly get ready for a bigger shoot. All my equipment was already packed no problem, but in my head were images of baby’s feet, not family group shots and so forth. So my mental pre-visualisation needed a quick oil change…

Anyway, by the end of the afternoon, we had the whole family captured in a variety of locations and combinations. And I’m delighted with the images:

Jack and his Dad, Rob. Jack is full of beans and up for anything!

Tom, very cute and full of character…

And Jamie, two of my favourite images from the day. Such grace and composure for her age.

They scrub up pretty well, don’t you think?

  1. Any family would be happy to have shots of this calibre in their album – very nice work! Did you ask them all to wear white tops + jeans for consistency? Natural lighting outside or fill flash?

Hi Nick, good questions as usual.

Janine had a look in mind for the images, based on the work of photographers whom she admired. These worked well, however I have seen some work where the consistancy of the outfits is a bit too much, and looks like a uniform. I always advise peole to aim for outfits that coordinate but don’t necessarily have to be exactly the same.

As for lighting, there is a mixture in here. some of the outside shots were lit with an umbrella, others were just natural light in the open shade.
